BACKYARD VEGETABLE GARDEN
Growing vegetables isn't just done in rows. Our backyard vegetable garden
(already growing up on the hill) will give you ideas about incorporating food
bearing plants into your landscaping and making your vegetable garden a beautiful
part of your property.
COMPOSTING
Feed plants, mulch beds and improve soil structure with nature's black gold.
We demonstrate systems for any setting and level of effort, which will help you turn yard waste,
cooking scraps and manure into nutrient-rich compost.
GREEN ROOF
Green roofs keep buildings cool, improve air quality and catch rainwater
where it falls. We will have a shallow (extensive) section growing sedums and
other drought-tolerant plants, and a deep (intensive) section growing vegetables.
PERVIOUS PAVERS
Paving blocks, concrete and asphalt specially constructed to let rainwater go
through the pavement instead of running off into the sewer. We'll be keeping track
of how the different pavers perform their job of decreasing stormwater runoff.
RAINWATER HARVESTING
Rain Barrels can be big or small, you'll see some of both at the GLS.
They catch water running off roofs so you can use it to water plants,
and do a good deed by keeping it out of our rivers.
SLOPED GREEN ROOF
Get an up-close view of the first sloped green roof in the Cincinnati region.
The first piece of the Green Learning Station is alive on the stone cottage next to the Civic Garden Center’s main building.
SOLAR FILM
Photovoltaic thin film is a new type of solar panel that rolls out flat on a roof and turns the sun’s energy into electricity.
VERTICAL GROWING
Climbing plants give big effects, and don't take up much space on the ground,
when they are trained up structures.
